- ONHYM:An organization in action
- Consolidation and activity
The history of minerals and petroleum exploration in our country is marked by important dates at decisive turning points for this vital sector of the economy. One of these turning points is the 17 August 2005, at the creation of the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines with the Law 33.01 of the 11 November 2003 and its decree on the 29 December 2004. The Board of ONHYM held its first meeting that day under the Chairmanship of the Prime Minister, while at the same time dissolving the BRPM and ONAREP.
The creation of this new Office thus heralds a new age of domestic subsurface exploration. By providing our country a public operator to meet the requirements of its mission, the public authorities placed this decision in the national energy context characterized by a strong dependence on outside sources to satisfy its domestic energy needs, including petroleum. This is a situation that has resulted in a worsening petroleum import bill due to the rising price of oil & gas on international markets.
The new office, through its petroleum department, is taking a strong part in the country energy strategy by intensified efforts in the oil & gas exploration. The expansion of oil and gas exploration has been observed after issuing the 2000 amendments to the Hydrocarbon Law offering a legislative incentive framework. This whole process contributed to attract 26 foreign companies to date. .
