Closely related to west African shield in the south and bounded by the accident-Atlas south to north, this area is formed by a Proterozoic basement consists of the following:

  • The northern part of the Archaean ridge of Reguibat dated at 2800 million years, the oldest in the country, which is affected by Eburnean orogeny 2200 million years.
  • North of this Eburnean base is the mobile part of the panafrican upper Proterozoic age, formed by a south platform itself relayed to the north by an ocean basin materialized by ophiolitic paleosutures of Bou-Azzer. Northeast of the suture and in the context of Pan-African subduction, has developed a volcanic arc with a procession of vulcanites and plutonic intrusions of calc-alkaline characteristics. These groups have been organized by the Pan-African orogeny.

These formations are covered in Proterozoic discrepancy by transgressive series ranging from the Carboniferous Infracambrian and are deformed, like those they cover, by the Hercynian orogeny. It is better expressed in particular in the western part of the Anti-Atlas.

It is constituted by the internal areas, the area of flyshs and the external areas.

  • The internal areas are represented in two regions on the Mediterranean coast: between Sebta and Jabha and in the Bokkoya. By their origin, these internal areas are related to Alboran plate, individualized in Mesozoic between Africa and Europe and are made up of several crystalline and sedimentary units.
  • The area of ground flyshs is constituted of units made up of detrital sedimentary series deposited in a deep basin at the margin of the Alboran plate.
  • The external areas correspond to the former external furrow, on the North African margin, covered by thick series of Mesozoic and Cenozoic. Among the units that make up these areas, some are rooted and others are in the form of tablecloths.
