Mission and Tasks

S6 1Analysis and petrophysicalpetrographic studies of sedimentary rocks. It is also the repository of a huge number of samples of rock and ground drilling (cuttings and cores), resulting from oil exploration in Morocco.

Their core missions, sedimentary petrology, involves the identification, classification, and studying the properties of sedimentary rocks and the description of their constituent elements, minerals or fossils. It integrates the data and methods from other branches of geology such as petrology, micropaleontology, mineralogy, stratigraphy and palaeoecology.

His openness and academic institutions and oil companies, national and international, allow the development of knowledge and development services. .


Three units that work closely with other units of the Laboratories Division of Oil and Basins Evaluation Division, who exploit their preparation, analysis and interpretations: 

  • Workshop of thin blades making
  • Petro physical analysis laboratory
  • Oil coring library

These three units provide the following analytical services and interpretation : ANALYTICAL SERVICES 

  • Manufacture of thin blades covered, dimensions 30x45mm, for the optical microscope observation
  • Preparation of polished sections of rocks, for the study reflected light
  • Conventional analysis of cores
  • Removal of plugs
  • Sawing cores
  • Measuring porosity [helium porosimeter]
  • Measuring permeability [helium permeameter]
  • Measuring density of grain
  • Analysis of the calcimetry
  • Analysis of the dolometry
  • Size analysis
  • Photomicrography of Microfacies
  • Echantillonnage [forage ou affleurement]
  • Management of field samples and boreholes (classification, archiving, maintaining the database of the drilling coring library)


  • Study of sedimentary rocks or detrital carbonate [cuttings, cores, or CLAB outcrop sample]
  • Study in petrographic thin blades sections:
  • Microfacies analysis [Identification section to test mineralized fossils (foraminifera, ostracods, Calpinels, brachiopods, bryozoans, Ammonites, echinoderms, corals, algae, ...) and identification of other petrographic constituents (matrix, cement, detrital elements, ...) sedimentary structures and porosity
  • Diagenetic analysis of characters and their influence on the evolution and distribution of porosity and permeability
  • Microfacies Interpretation in terms of stratigraphic ages based on microfossils
  • Interpretation of palaeoenvironments deposits from all constituents of sedimentological and palaeontological rock and their mutual arrangement
  • Study of geological cross surface (collection of rock samples for analysis and study)
  • Lithostratigraphic correlation of drilling and logging of outcrops
  • Geological Monitoring and supervising drilling operations daily poll


Sedimentary Petrology the department is the custodian of the field samples and boreholes (cores and cuttings), related to oil exploration in Morocco.

These samples of 710 onshore and offshore drilling, distributed 23,000 boxes, are a real heritage, the team DPSE working to preserve and protect.

A database of drilling samples (geographical and geological situation in the coring library, details on the cores and cuttings, analysis or studies ...) It is managed through the system PARADOX-MS-DOS on the PC 486. A proposed acquisition of a new system was proposed.
